Introduction
The island of Ireland is the jewel in the North-East Atlantic
crown. Its location, and varied
marine and coastal
environments support rich and diverse plant and animal communities,
including seabirds, turtles
and marine mammals (seals,
porpoise, dolphins and whales).

Compared to a land area of 68,895km², the Republic of Ireland's
exclusive economic zone covers 410,310km² [1]
of the North-East Atlantic Ocean. Subject to international arbitration,
Ireland claims a seabed area of 525,000km².
